“As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight,” James McNeil Whistler once wrote.
Over the last few years, artists have worked harder than ever to bridge the gap between art and music.
See below to see the tracks every art lover should know (in no particular order):
1. Florence and the Machine – What the Water Gave Me
If you want some quiet time to focus on your projects, listen to this song inspired from Frida Kahlo painting.
2. Coldplay – Viva La Vida
Another song inspired from Frida Kahlo’s painting. Coldplay front-man Chris Martin said he was inspired by Kahlo’s perseverance in the face of polio, spinal injury, and chronic pain, he told Rolling Stone. He said, “She went through a lot of pain, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said Viva la Vida; I just loved the boldness of it.”
3. Don McLean – Vincent (Starry Starry Night)
Talking about songs inspired by artists, “Vincent” is a song by Don McLean written as a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. It is also known by its opening line, “Starry Starry Night”, a reference to Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night. The song also describes different paintings done by the artist.
4. Pharell Williams – Happy
A happy song with the title Happy is a great song to listen to when starting your day. The video is also visually appealing that any creative person would easily appreciate as it didn’t involve scenes of sex, politics and violence.
5. Jay Z – Picasso Baby
This song is featured here not because of the title but because of Marina Abramović, a popular figure in the art world to team up with hip hop mogul Jay Z for the music video for his 2013 single, which makes references to Art Basel, the Tate Modern, Jeff Koons, and Leonardo da Vinci, among artists and art institutions.
6. Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood
If you want something different and nod your head with every beat of the song, this song is a must-listen! Its video is fun to watch as well.
7. The Cars – Hello Again
What better way to keep momentum on their side than to enlist the services of one of the biggest names in art, Andy Warhol? Groove with this song while finishing your handmade crafts. A great song to keep you awake.
8. Donna Summer – Love To Love You Baby
Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” moved the masses in 1975 during the height of the disco era. It’s a track that will definitely move your body to enjoy what you’re doing at the moment.
So that’s on my list. How about you? What’s your playlist when doing handmade stuff?
