Are you looking for a way to properly track the conversions and sales on your handmade business website without editing the site code or having to involve a webmaster? How often have you had to pull in a webmaster to check up a script integration gone wrong?

How To Accurately Track Your Website SalesLuckily for us, Google in its kindness decided to give us an amazing tool to do just that. Google Tag Manager.

Google Tag Manager is a free tool that integrates with your Google Analytics and makes it easy for you to add and update website tags — including conversion tracking, site analytics, remarketing, and more—with just a few clicks, and without needing to edit your website code.

It also reduces errors, frees you from having to involve a webmaster, and allows you to quickly deploy tracking on your site.

Benefits Of A Tag Management System

Google Tag Manager is an important tool for online handmade businesses, it makes marketing and measurement easier and more secure.Tag management allows for complex installations of tracking and analysis code snippets to be easily placed into websites, without ever needing to touch the code again. You just need to add the tag in your management dashboard and it will appear in the pages you designate – so long as the tag snippet has been inserted.

What Is A Tag?

A tag is snippet of JavaScript that sends information to a third party, such as Google. If you don’t use a tag management solution such as Google Tag Manager, you need to add these snippets of JavaScript directly to the source code of your site. In contrast, with Google Tag Manager, you no longer need to maintain each of these JavaScript snippets in your source code; instead, you specify the tags that you want to fire, and when you want them to fire, in the Google Tag Manager user interface.

Begin by identifying all of the tags you have deployed on your site and where they are deployed (e.g. in global headers or footers, on landing pages, confirmation pages, in response to button clicks, etc.).

How It Works

Google Tag Manager works via a container snippet that you place on all your website pages. The container snippet replaces AdWords, Google Analytics , Floodlight, and other tags on your site. Once a container snippet has been added to your site, you update, add, and administer tags from your Google Tag Manager account.

Your Google Tag Manager account allows you to administer the tags for one or more websites. Although you can set up multiple Google Tag Manager accounts from a single Google account, you’ll typically only need one Google Tag Manager account per company.

Accounts can include a company or organization, with lots of websites (such as a craft supplies store with different websites for each location), or a small local company (like a local handmade products store) with only one site. Containers hold all the tags relating to one website or mobile application.

Google Tag Manager Set Up

Go to Google Tag Manager and sign in in the top right hand corner. Follow the instructions if it’s your first time signing up with your email address and enter your account name. GTM’s structure has accounts at the highest level, and containers within those accounts. You then set up tags within each of those containers.

There you have it. So what are your thoughts with this tool? Please let us know in the comment box below.
