Whether you’re running the simplest craft blog or an enormous international ecommerce craft site, you should be measuring how visitors interact with your website.
The best tool to help you? Google Analytics!
Google Analytics is a free platform that generates detailed statistics about the visits to a website. It allows you to measure who comes to your web site, where they came from, and what they do when they get there.
It also has advanced features that will help you understand your site visitors even more. You can use this data to improve the structure of your website, gain marketing intelligence and increase conversions for better website navigation.
Here’s a step-by-step Google Analytics Setup video for you:
Google Analytics Set Up
Set up Google Analytics in a few simple steps:
- Log in or Sign Up for a Google Account
- After sign up, visit the Google Analytics website, and click on the “Access Analytics” button.
- Search for the “Sign Up” button to get started.
- You will need to register an “Account Name” (ideally, go with domain.com as it makes it easy for you if you have multiple websites), your website’s URL, and the time zone you are located in.
- You will be asked if you want to share your analytics data with other Google products. Preferably, you can share your data to other Google products like Adwords, Webmaster tools, and Adsense.
Create New Profile
Google Analytics will give you one profile by default. The profile is the basis of which data from your site appears in the reports. When considering profiles and how they work, first remember that an Analytics account can track a single web property, or track many web independent properties.
To create a new profile:
- Find the account that contains the property to which you want to add a profile. If you have a lot of accounts or properties, use the drop down search box in the top left of the menu bar.
- Click the property to which you want to add a profile.
- Go to the Admin bar located in the upper right side of the Google Analytics page.
- Click +New Profile.
- Select either Web or App.
- Enter a name for the profile. (This could be your craft site’s name or world wide web address)
- Select a Reporting Time Zone. Choose a country/territory and standard time zone.
Hit Create Profile
From there, you will be able to use the basics of Google Analytics.
